Insurable Risks Derived From Growing Businesses

Picture
A business insurance review
Recently, small business owners were surveyed to help identify some of the top risks they faced when growing their businesses.  Many small business owners are unaware of the new, and increased, risks that come with growth.  For example, many business owners erroneously think that a claim is not covered, so they fail to file the claim.  A leading commercial insurer has identified the top five most costly business insurance claims.
Leading losses for small businesses and the average claim cost
  • Reputational harm: $50,000
  • Vehicle accident: $45,000
  • Fire damage: $35,000
  • Product liability: $35,000
  • Customer injury or property damage: $30,000
New and growing risks faced by expanding businesses
As your business grows, your risks change.  It is beneficial for business owners to have an understanding of how risks change because of growth.
  • Contract disputes increase. Growing businesses often develop relationships without written agreements, resulting in disputes.
  • Increased employee litigation. When businesses hire new people, often they overlook proper hiring practices.  This often leads to litigation.  Make sure your business has an employment practices liability policy.
  • Increase in worker injuries.  A greater workload leads to increased hours and the possibility of employee injury.  Your workers’ compensation policy will cover work related injuries.
  • Building damage. Often, growing businesses fail to pay attention to building maintenance, which can lead to all kinds of damage.  Read your property policy to make sure you do not void your coverage through lack of attention to safety issues.

Spring Is the Best Time To Review Your Home Insurance

Picture
A personal insurance update
Spring is here and many of us are gearing up for many different kinds of activities that might lead to a claim.  Your homeowner’s insurance is designed to protect yourself and your property from unforeseen injury and/or damage.  However, remember that there are limitations with your homeowner’s insurance policy.

Spring and summer insurance risks
  • Trampolines.  If you own a trampoline you may want to call our office to make sure you are covered.
  • Swimming pools. Many insurers will not cover swimming pools. Make sure you are covered, call us today.
  • Renting out your home. If you have decided to rent your home while you are on vacation, you may not be covered.  Most insurers exclude coverage for rental property.
  • Watercraft. If you bought a boat or other kind of watercraft, you will need to add it to your policy.
  • Foreign travel. If you are planning any foreign travel, you might want to consider special travel accident insurance.
  • BBQ time. When you barbeque, make sure you keep the grill away from all structures.  Limit alcohol use while you are barbequing.

Insurance That Is Environmentally Friendly

Picture
A Texas personal insurance update
Are you committed to “going green” in all areas of your life?  If that is the case, the insurance industry offers several green alternatives.  There are several eco-friendly products for you to consider as part of your personal insurance program.
The insurance industry has developed these unique personal insurance products to help you save the environment and have a competitively priced program.
  • There are premium discounts for homes that meet stringent efficiency and sustainability standards.
  • Discounts are available for using eco-friendly building materials.
  • Many auto insurers offer special coverage for Hybrid vehicles.
  • There are unique auto policies that are “pay as you go,” so you only pay for the miles you drive.
  • If you generate your own solar or wind power and derive income from that power, there are special polices that can cover a loss of income.
  • Some companies will give homeowners extra premium credit if they replace old kilowatt-hungry appliances with Energy-Star devices and recycle debris rather than send destroyed materials straight to a landfill.  (The Energy-Star label means the appliances meet an energy-savings rating created by a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy.)
