Be Aware of Insurance Scams In Texas

Picture
People are in Harvey recovery mode in Texas, but there will be many people trying to cheat you out of your money. We talk to people every day that have had issues with contractors regarding work performed on their homes. Many people use the internet to search for contractors and end up with trouble. While the internet is not always a bad place to search for contractors, we suggest that you recommend to your clients do a little homework before they sign any agreement.
  1. Before you hire a contractor ask for references. The Better Business Bureau is a good place to start.
  2. The Texas Department of Business and Professional Regulation, maintains a database of what contractors are licensed for what scope on the state level. You can check a contractor’s license here.
  3. Ask for a certificate for insurance before any work is performed, it should include bonding and workers’ compensation insurance. Check the dates on the license as well as the insurance to ensure they’re currently in force or active.
  4. Know what you want and have a specific list of products, including the brands. For example, if you want an air conditioner, be specific about the type and brand. There are many brands; some good and some not so good.
  5. Always have a written contract with a completion date.
  6. Go visit other homes on which the contractor has worked.
  7. Some contractors may ask for 100% of the payment upfront. Never do this. A small (10% to 15% up front is normal)
  8. Establish the timeline and hold them to it.
This can be a good way to hire a contractor and save money and headaches in the future.
